Monthly rates by family
VA’s table has one row for each family. “1 child” means one child under 18 (or a child who became permanently unable to support themselves before 18); more children and children in school are added below.
| Family | A month | A year |
|---|---|---|
| Veteran alone | $2,102.15 | $25,225.80 |
| With a spouse | $2,277.15 | $27,325.80 |
| With 1 child | $2,219.15 | $26,629.80 |
| With a spouse and 1 child | $2,406.15 | $28,873.80 |
| With 1 parent | $2,242.15 | $26,905.80 |
| With 2 parents | $2,382.15 | $28,585.80 |
| With a spouse and 1 parent | $2,417.15 | $29,005.80 |
| With a spouse and 2 parents | $2,557.15 | $30,685.80 |
| With 1 child and 1 parent | $2,359.15 | $28,309.80 |
| With 1 child and 2 parents | $2,499.15 | $29,989.80 |
| With a spouse, 1 child and 1 parent | $2,546.15 | $30,553.80 |
| With a spouse, 1 child and 2 parents | $2,686.15 | $32,233.80 |
More children, children in school, Aid and Attendance
| Add-on | Adds a month |
|---|---|
| Each child under 18 beyond the first | $87.00 |
| Each child 18–23 in schoolpaid instead of the child rate | $281.00 |
| A spouse who receives Aid and Attendance | $161.00 |
Example: a spouse and 2 children under 18 at 80% is the “spouse and 1 child” row, $2,406.15, plus $87.00 for the second child: $2,493.15 a month.
A child 18 to 23 in a school program is paid the school-child amount on its own and never counts as the table’s “1 child” (38 U.S.C. 1115(1)(F), “notwithstanding the other provisions”; the footnote of VA’s December 1, 2019 rate tables).
What changed on December 1, 2025
VA’s rates rose 2.8% on December 1, 2025. At 80%, a veteran alone went from $2,044.89 to $2,102.15 a month (+$57.26).
With a spouse and 1 child: $2,340.89 → $2,406.15.
The next December 1 change
VA hasn’t published the December 1, 2026 rates yet (checked October 28, 2026). Social Security’s notice in the Federal Register of October 26, 2026 sets a 3.6% cost-of-living increase effective December 2026; VA’s increase needs the yearly VA COLA act, so no December 1, 2026 amount is shown here.
With military retired pay: CRDP and CRSC
Without either program, military retired pay is reduced by the amount of VA compensation received — the VA waiver of 38 U.S.C. 5305. CRDP restores retired pay; CRSC is a separate payment that is not retired pay (10 U.S.C. 1413a(g)). Neither is figured here, and the service and the paying agencies decide.
- CRDP (10 U.S.C. 1414) needs a combined rating of at least 50%. At 80% that line is met for a retiree entitled to retired pay; it doesn’t apply to a member retired for disability (chapter 61) with fewer than 20 years of service.
- CRSC (10 U.S.C. 1413a) is for a retiree entitled to retired pay who has a combat-related disability. It pays the VA compensation for the combat-related disabilities only, up to the retired pay waived (with lower limits for chapter 61 disability retirees, 1413a(b)(3)); the retiree applies to the military department.
What counts as combat-relatedCombat-related, in the law
A disability VA compensates that is attributable to an injury for which the Purple Heart was awarded, or was incurred as a direct result of armed conflict, while engaged in hazardous service, in duty under conditions simulating war, or through an instrumentality of war.
- A retiree who meets both rules receives CRSC or CRDP, not both, and may switch in an annual open season (10 U.S.C. 1414(d)).
