Waist-to-height checker, all services

One waist and one height against the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps rules side by side — each service’s own line and its own rounding, exactly as the rule reads.

The calculator

Your measurements
Measured in

Half inches, as the services record them (e.g. 36.5). How to measure is below.

Your waist-to-height ratio

Example

0.5000

36 in ÷ 72 in · each service applies its own rounding, and each row says the largest waist that meets its line at your height:

  • ArmyMeetsLargest waist at 72 in tall: 39.5 in (3.5 in to spare)Under 0.55: the ratio is truncated to 3 decimals (0.500), and 0.549 or less meets. In effect from July 7, 2026; the tape test is gone.

  • NavyMeets step 1Largest waist for step 1 at 72 in tall: 39.5 in (3.5 in to spare)Rounded down to 4 decimals (0.5000); 0.5499 or less meets step 1 of the body composition assessment. From January 1, 2026.
  • Marine CorpsMeetsLargest waist at 72 in tall: 37 in (1 in to spare)0.52 or less on the unrounded ratio (0.5000); no rounding of the ratio is stated. Semiannual, from January 1, 2026.

Air Force points by waist at 72 in tall

The largest waist that still earns each row of the chart at your height, with the ratio truncated to 2 decimals as AFMAN 36-2905 says. Your row is marked.

How the math works

  1. The ratioWaist ÷ height, both in inches (half-inch steps): 36 ÷ 72 = 0.5000.
  2. ArmyUnder 0.55. The ratio is truncated to 3 decimals and 0.549 or less meets (0.549888 → 0.549 meets; 0.550 does not). 3. Air ForceTruncated (not rounded) to 2 decimals, then points: 0.49 or less → 20, 0.50 → 19, 0.51 → 18, 0.52 → 17, 0.53 → 16, 0.54 → 15, 0.55 → 12.5, 0.56 → 10, 0.57 → 7.5, 0.58 → 5, 0.59 → 2.5, 0.60 or more → 0. PFRA Scoring Charts, cao 17 Mar 26 (page dated )
  4. NavyStep 1 of the body composition assessment: the ratio rounded down to 4 decimals, 0.5499 or less meets. Over it, step 2 is a body-fat calculation (not modeled here).Physical Readiness Program Guide-4, Body Composition Assessment (JUN 2026) · Physical Readiness Program Guide-1, Policies (AUG 2026) · NAVADMIN 264/25, Navy Physical Readiness Program for Calendar Year 2026 (page dated )
  5. Marine Corps0.52 or less, checked semiannually from January 1, 2026. No rounding of the ratio is stated, so the unrounded ratio is compared: 37.5 ÷ 72 = 0.5208 is over 0.52.MARADMIN 066/26, Change 1 to the advance notification of changes to the Marine Corps PFT (para 3.d, WHtR measurements) (page dated ) · Marine Corps revises body composition standards (MARADMIN 066/26) · MARADMIN 073/26, correction to MARADMIN 066/26 (WHtR standard) (page dated )

Not modeled here

  • Navy step 2: Not modeled — the body-fat calculation that follows a ratio over 0.5499 isn’t computed here (checked October 6, 2026).

  • Marine Corps body-fat allowances: Not modeled — the allowances for 285+ and 250+ on both the PFT and CFT are stated in MARADMIN 066/26, not computed here (checked October 6, 2026).

  • Space Force and Coast Guard: Not modeled — their own body composition programs aren’t covered by this tool (checked October 6, 2026).

How to measure

Measure where your service does — the services don’t use the same spot. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps measure at the navel; the Air Force measures midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone. The number of measurements differs too.

Each service’s own measuring and rounding rules
ArmyWhere: at the navel (belly button), tape parallel to the floor (EXORD 182-26 Annex A). How: Waist measured three times, each recorded down to the nearest half inch (a fourth if one differs by more than an inch); height to the nearest half inch. Ratio: truncated to 3 decimals (0.549888 → 0.549; 0.550 does not meet).
Air ForceWhere: midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone (iliac crest), on bare skin, at the end of a normal breath out (AFMAN 36-2905, 3.15.4.5). How: Waist measured three times, each rounded down to the nearest half inch (a fourth if one differs by more than an inch), the three closest averaged and rounded down to the half inch; height to the nearest half inch. Ratio: truncated to 2 decimals for points.
NavyWhere: at the belly button (umbilicus), tape parallel to the deck, after a normal breath out (PRP Guide-4). How: Waist measured two times, each rounded down to the nearest half inch (if they differ by more than an inch, a third, and the two closest averaged); height rounded up to the nearest half inch. Ratio: rounded down to the fourth decimal place (0.5499).
Marine CorpsWhere: at the navel, tape parallel to the deck (MARADMIN 066/26). How: Waist measured twice, the lower kept, rounded down to the nearest half inch; height rounded down to the nearest half inch. Ratio: no rounding stated — the unrounded ratio is compared.

The Army’s old 465/80 body-fat exemption was rescinded by Army Directive 2026-13; it no longer applies.

How we check the numbers

  1. From the agency’s own tables. Pay from DFAS, housing from DoD’s BAH file, VA rates from VA, fitness scores from each service’s current scoring tables — looked up the way the tables read, never interpolated.
  2. Two dates on every answer. The date a rate took effect and the date it was last checked against the agency’s page. A rule that can’t be confirmed says “Not modeled” and why, instead of a guess.
  3. Tested, then logged. The arithmetic runs on one engine with automated tests built from the agencies’ own worked examples; every rate or rule change goes into the public change log with its source.
