Deployment pay calculator for one month

Hostile fire or imminent danger pay, family separation allowance and hardship duty pay for a month, with how much of your military pay the combat zone tax exclusion covers.

The calculator

Month
Hostile fire or imminent danger pay

HFP is a full month when you were exposed to hostile fire; IDP is paid by the day in a designated area. DFAS pays only one of them in a month.

Family separation allowance

For members with dependents who are separated from them for more than 30 days in a row.

Hardship duty pay (location) tier

Your location’s tier is in DFAS’s HDP-L location table.

  • TSP: combat-zone contributions count toward the $72,000 annual additions limit; catch-up contributions from combat-zone pay must be Roth.
  • We show the excluded amount only — not the tax it saves (federal tax isn’t modeled).
  • FSA isn’t counted in the exclusion figure (whether it is taxable isn’t in our research).

How the math works

Each special pay has its own rule and its own cap; the combat zone exclusion then decides how much of the month’s military pay is free of federal income tax.

  1. Hostile fire pay or imminent danger pay — never bothHFP is $450 for any month you qualify, not prorated. IDP is $9.16 a day in a designated area, up to $275 a month (a complete month in the area pays the full amount). DFAS pays only one of them in a month. Both rose on October 1, 2026; before that HFP was $225 and IDP $7.50 a day, up to $225.The law allows up to $450 (HFP) and $275 (IDP); the authority runs through December 31, 2026.Increase in Monthly Amounts of Hostile Fire Pay and Imminent Danger Pay (memo signed July 14, 2026) (page dated ) · Hostile Fire Pay and Imminent Danger Pay (page dated ) · DoD FMR Vol. 7A Ch. 10, Hostile Fire Pay / Imminent Danger Pay · 37 U.S.C. 351, Hazardous duty pay
  2. Family separation allowance$300 a month, or $10 a day for part of a month, from December 18, 2025, when Congress raised it from $250. For December 2025 the rate changed mid-month, so that month says “Not modeled”.Family Separation Allowance · 37 U.S.C. 427, Family separation allowance · MARADMIN 150/26, Change to Family Separation Allowance (FSA) rate (page dated )
  3. Hardship duty pay (location)$50, $100, $150 a month by location tier. In a month with HFP or IDP it is capped at $100.Through September 30, 2026, HDP-L plus HFP/IDP also couldn’t pass $325, and a partial IDP month shows HDP-L as a range (the FMR and DFAS’s table note read differently).Increase in Monthly Amounts of Hostile Fire Pay and Imminent Danger Pay (memo signed July 14, 2026) (page dated ) · Hardship Duty Pay – Location rates (page dated ) · DoD FMR Vol. 7A Ch. 17, Hardship Duty Pay
  4. Combat zone tax exclusion: enlisted and warrant officersFor a month with at least one day in a combat zone or qualified hazardous duty area, all military pay for that month is excluded from federal income tax.DoD FMR Vol. 7A Ch. 44, Combat Zone Tax Exclusion
  5. Combat zone tax exclusion: commissioned officersExcluded up to the highest enlisted basic pay ($11,166.90 in 2026) plus the HFP or IDP actually paid — $11,616.90 in a full HFP month. The rest stays taxable. We show the excluded amount, not the tax it saves: federal tax isn’t modeled.DoD FMR Vol. 7A Ch. 44, Combat Zone Tax Exclusion · Basic Pay – Enlisted, effective January 1, 2026 (page dated )
  6. TSP in a combat-zone monthTax-exempt contributions count toward the yearly annual-additions limit, and catch-up contributions from combat-zone pay must be Roth. The TSP calculator has the limits.IRS Notice 2025-67, 2026 Amounts Relating to Retirement Plans · TSP contribution limits (page dated )

Not modeled here

  • Tax saved: Not modeled — the exclusion’s value depends on your whole tax return; we don’t compute federal or state tax (checked October 13, 2026).

  • Savings Deposit Program: Not modeled — the deposit program’s 10% interest isn’t modeled.

  • Per diem and family separation housing: Not modeled — they depend on orders and location rates we don’t carry.

  • HFP and IDP after December 31, 2026: Not modeled — the authority in 37 USC 351 runs through December 31, 2026; a later month says “Not modeled” until an extension is in our data (checked October 13, 2026).

  • Other special and incentive pays: Not modeled — flight, dive, sea and other pays aren’t computed; add them under “Other military pay” for an officer’s exclusion limit.

How we check the numbers

  1. From the agency’s own tables. Pay from DFAS, housing from DoD’s BAH file, VA rates from VA, fitness scores from each service’s current scoring tables — looked up the way the tables read, never interpolated.
  2. Two dates on every answer. The date a rate took effect and the date it was last checked against the agency’s page. A rule that can’t be confirmed says “Not modeled” and why, instead of a guess.
  3. Tested, then logged. The arithmetic runs on one engine with automated tests built from the agencies’ own worked examples; every rate or rule change goes into the public change log with its source.
