GI Bill® calculator for 2026–2027

Post-9/11 housing, tuition and books for your school — your benefit level, the tuition VA pays, the monthly housing allowance at the school’s ZIP code or the online rate — plus the Montgomery GI Bill’s monthly rates.

The calculator

Which GI Bill®

Montgomery means the Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD), a flat monthly payment.

Your service

After September 10, 2001. 1,095 days (three years) or more is the 100% level.

Classes

ZIP+4 is fine. Don’t know it? Type your school or base — the list has the schools with the most GI Bill students.

Full time = 100%. Housing needs more than 50%.

Books: up to 24 credits.

  • Benefit level from VA.gov’s tiers; 38 CFR 21.9641 (eCFR as of October 2, 2026) still shows older tiers (90–179 days = 40%, 180–364 = 50%, 365–544 = 60%).
  • Housing uses the January 2026 BAH for the whole academic year 2026-2027 (VA). VA’s GI Bill Comparison Tool may show a different housing figure for some ZIPs; VA’s figure is what VA pays.
  • The paying agency may round differently by a cent (VA hasn’t stated its MHA rounding).
  • VA’s data also shows a higher “grandfathered” rate here ($4,101.00 at 100%) for students who first used Post-9/11 before January 1, 2018. It isn’t used here.

How the math works

Four amounts, each times your benefit level. The Post-9/11 rates run from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027.

  1. Benefit level from your days of service1,095+ days → 100% · 910–1,094 days → 90% · 730–909 days → 80% · 545–729 days → 70% · 180–544 days → 60% · 90–179 days → 50%. A Purple Heart (on or after September 11, 2001), or 30+ days in a row with a discharge for a service-connected disability, is 100%.The eCFR copy of 38 CFR 21.9641 still shows older tiers (90–179 days → 40%, 180–364 days → 50%, 365–544 days → 60%); we use VA.gov’s current table.Post-9/11 GI Bill rates (page dated ) · 38 CFR 21.9641, Post-9/11 GI Bill rates of payment (page dated )
  2. Tuition and feesPublic school: net in-state tuition and fees × your level, with no cap. Private or foreign school: up to $30,908.34 a year × your level. Flight training up to $17,661.89; correspondence up to $15,012.59.Post-9/11 GI Bill rates (page dated )
  3. Housing: the BAH for an E‑5 with dependents at the school’s ZIP× your level × your rate of pursuit rounded to the nearest tenth — and only when the rate of pursuit is more than 50%. VA uses the January 2026 BAH for the whole year. Online only: up to $1,198 × your level; outside the U.S.: up to $2,396. Not paid while you’re on active duty.Post-9/11 GI Bill rates (page dated ) · BAH rates, all locations and pay grades, 2026 (ASCII)
  4. VA’s own figure: your school, or the ZIPType your school’s name in the ZIP box and the calculator uses the housing figure on that school’s profile in VA’s GI Bill Comparison Tool (223 schools with the most GI Bill students, read October 7, 2026); for 221 of them it equals DoD’s BAH at the school’s ZIP. For a ZIP alone the answer is DoD’s BAH; where VA’s ZIP data shows the same figure (380 ZIPs read) the card says so, and otherwise it is marked “DoD-based estimate”. VA’s ZIP-lookup table often names a far-away area (ZIP 23511 → “Hampton, VA”, $2,274.00), so a figure from it that differs from DoD’s is reported, never used.VA GI Bill Comparison Tool ZIP rates (79607) · GI Bill Comparison Tool

Not modeled here

  • The grandfathered housing rate: Not modeled — students who first used Post-9/11 before January 1, 2018 get a higher housing rate ($4,101.00 at 92136 in VA’s data); the calculator uses the standard rate.

  • Schools outside our list: Not modeled — we carry VA’s school-profile figure for the 223 schools with the most GI Bill students (read October 13, 2026); for any other school the answer is DoD’s BAH at its ZIP, marked as an estimate — VA’s GI Bill Comparison Tool has every school.

  • How VA rounds housing: Not modeled — VA hasn’t published how it rounds the monthly housing amount (checked October 13, 2026); we round once to the cent.

  • Yellow Ribbon and school contributions: Not modeled — what a school adds over the private-school cap depends on the school’s agreement with VA.

  • Rudisill (two qualifying periods): Not modeled — up to 48 months combined between the Montgomery and Post-9/11 GI Bills — explained in the guide, not computed.

  • Entitlement left and breaks: Not modeled — months of benefit remaining, and housing for partial months and breaks, depend on your VA record and school calendar.

How we check the numbers

  1. From the agency’s own tables. Pay from DFAS, housing from DoD’s BAH file, VA rates from VA, fitness scores from each service’s current scoring tables — looked up the way the tables read, never interpolated.
  2. Two dates on every answer. The date a rate took effect and the date it was last checked against the agency’s page. A rule that can’t be confirmed says “Not modeled” and why, instead of a guess.
  3. Tested, then logged. The arithmetic runs on one engine with automated tests built from the agencies’ own worked examples; every rate or rule change goes into the public change log with its source.
