  • A typed base or town name becomes the ZIP in that installation’s main contact address on Military OneSource: a representative ZIP for its housing area, not every ZIP on the base. The visitor sees the ZIP and can change it.
  • aka lists the names people search for (the 2023 names such as Fort Liberty, nearby towns). They only find the installation; they are never shown as its name.
  • Every ZIP is checked against DoD’s 2026 BAH file by scripts/test-places.mjs. Excluded: joint-base-mcguire-dix-lakehurst (its Military OneSource ZIP (08642) is not in DoD’s 2026 BAH file).

  • VA’s own monthly housing figure (Post-9/11 MHA at 100%, full time) per ZIP, from the API behind VA’s GI Bill Comparison Tool: the 13 example ZIPs read 2026-10-06, then the ZIPs of the 230 schools with the most GI Bill students and of 157 installations, read 2026-10-07. VA places some ZIPs in a different housing area than DoD’s BAH file (e.g. 23511: VA “Hampton, VA” $2,274 vs DoD VA298 Norfolk/Portsmouth $2,430).
  • mha_rate_grandfathered is VA’s higher rate for students who first used Post-9/11 before January 1, 2018 (shown as a fact, not computed).
  • ZIPs that VA’s API doesn’t know (404) are listed in notFound.
  • schools: the 230 schools with the most GI Bill students in VA’s Comparison Tool data (October 1, 2026), minus online-only campuses, so a visitor can type a school name in the ZIP field. ZIP, vaHousing (dod_bah: the monthly housing VA’s school profile shows at 100%) and vaHousingGrandfathered (bah) come from each school’s profile in VA’s API (api.va.gov/v0/gi/institutions/<facility code>), read 2026-10-07.
  • Finding (2026-10-07): the ZIP-lookup endpoint (zipcode_rates) disagrees with DoD’s BAH file for 137 of the 380 ZIPs and often names a far-away area (20005 Washington, DC → “CHARLOTTE, NC”; 22030 Fairfax → “FORT ROYAL, VA”), while VA’s own school profiles agree with DoD’s BAH at the school ZIP for 228 of 230 schools. The GI Bill tool therefore uses a ZIP-lookup figure only where it agrees with DoD’s, uses the school-profile figure when a school is picked by name, and otherwise shows DoD’s figure labelled as an estimate.

How the data is read and checked

Every number comes from the agency that publishes it — DFAS, the Defense Travel Management Office, VA, the services, the TSP and the IRS — and is stored with the version of the table, the dates it is in force and the date it was last checked. The original files are kept unchanged next to the data with their SHA-256 checksums, so a changed source file is detected rather than guessed. The site’s build stops publishing if a dataset goes too long without being verified, or runs past the end of the period it covers.

Some agency pages refuse automated access. Those pages are read in an ordinary browser, through a text renderer, or as the Internet Archive’s copy of the exact official address — and the numbers are always matched to the live text before they are used.

Data is published here for reference. The paying or deciding agency’s own figures are the official ones. See the Editorial Policy and the change log.
