Rate protection. DoD: “No matter what happens to housing costs – including the out-of-pocket expense adjustment – an individual service member who maintains uninterrupted basic allowance for housing eligibility at a given location will not see a rate decrease.” We can’t know a rate-protected amount you already receive; your LES shows it.

How the math works

BAH is one lookup in two steps: where the ZIP is, then what that housing area pays your grade. DoD publishes whole-dollar rates; we use them exactly.

  1. ZIP code → military housing areaDoD’s 2026 file maps 40,959 ZIP codes to 338 military housing areas. In the example, ZIP 92136 is in CA038 San Diego, CA.ZIP+4 works — the first five digits are used. A ZIP that isn’t in the file is an error at the field, never a guess.BAH rates, all locations and pay grades, 2026 (ASCII)
  2. Housing area → your grade, with or without dependentsEach area has one rate per grade for members with dependents and one without. In the example, E-5 with dependents at CA038 is $3,975.00 a month, $47,700.00 a year (× 12).O-8, O-9 and O-10 are the same as O-7 in DoD’s file ($5,586.00 at CA038). In every 2026 housing area, E-1 to E-4 with dependents share one rate.BAH rates, all locations and pay grades, 2026 (ASCII) · BAH Rate Lookup
  3. Not every ZIP is a BAH location214 ZIP codes map to XX499, “not a BAH location”: ZIP codes in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Pacific territories. The calculator says so instead of showing a number; other allowances (OHA, COLA) may apply there.BAH Rate Lookup
  4. Dates matter in one area: TX270 Abilene/Dyess AFBDoD raised TX270 temporarily from May 16, 2026 to December 31, 2026: E-5 with dependents is $1,554.00 through May 15, 2026 and $1,872.00 from May 16, 2026. The calculator uses the date under “More options” (today unless you change it).Temporary BAH increase for Abilene/Dyess AFB (page dated )
  5. Rate protectionNo matter what happens to housing costs – including the out-of-pocket expense adjustment – an individual service member who maintains uninterrupted basic allowance for housing eligibility at a given location will not see a rate decrease. If your rate is protected at an older, higher amount, your LES shows it — the calculator can’t know it.Department of War releases 2026 Basic Allowance for Housing rates
  6. Comparing duty stationsEvery ZIP is drawn on the same dollar scale; the difference is the highest rate minus the lowest, a month and × 12 a year.
  7. Other BAH typesPartial BAH, BAH-RC/T and BAH-DIFF don’t depend on the ZIP: one national rate per grade from DoD’s 2026 non-locality table. One-line definitions come from the DoD Financial Management Regulation.2026 Non-Locality BAH Rates (page dated ) · DoD FMR Vol. 7A Ch. 26, Housing Allowances

Not modeled here

  • 2027 rates: Not modeled — DoD usually publishes next year’s BAH in mid-December; a date in 2027 says “Not modeled” until the file is in our data (checked October 13, 2026).

  • Your protected rate: Not modeled — a member who keeps uninterrupted BAH eligibility at one location keeps an older, higher rate; only your LES shows it.

  • Overseas housing (OHA) and COLA: Not modeled — they use other tables we don’t carry.

  • Dual-military and special cases: Not modeled — who draws the with-dependents rate in a dual-military couple, and BAH during training or TDY, follow rules this calculator doesn’t ask about.

How we check the numbers

  1. From the agency’s own tables. Pay from DFAS, housing from DoD’s BAH file, VA rates from VA, fitness scores from each service’s current scoring tables — looked up the way the tables read, never interpolated.
  2. Two dates on every answer. The date a rate took effect and the date it was last checked against the agency’s page. A rule that can’t be confirmed says “Not modeled” and why, instead of a guess.
  3. Tested, then logged. The arithmetic runs on one engine with automated tests built from the agencies’ own worked examples; every rate or rule change goes into the public change log with its source.
