Navy PRT and Marine PFT/CFT 2026: scoring and combat-arms rules

The question

How are the Navy PRT and the Marine PFT and CFT scored in 2026?

Short answer

The Navy scores each PRT event in levels from Probationary (45 points) to Outstanding-High (100); you pass with Probationary or better in all three events, and the overall category comes from the average. The Marine Corps adds three events to a total out of 300: 150 passes if every event meets its own minimum, and Marines in combat-arms specialties now need 210 on the male tables.

The Navy and the Marine Corps both changed their fitness rules for 2026, mostly at the edges: who is held to a combat-arms standard, how body composition is screened and which instruction is current. The scoring tables themselves are the ones in Guide-5A (Navy, December 2025) and Marine Corps Order (MCO) 6100.13A with administrative change 5 (Marine Corps). Both services trace the combat-arms changes to the Secretary of War’s Military Fitness Standards memo of September 30, 2025 — “War” being the secondary name the Department of Defense (DoD) has used since September 2025.

All example scores below come from the same engine and tables as our Navy PRT calculator and Marine Corps PFT and CFT calculator.

The current instruction is OPNAVINST 6110.1L with change 1 (July 21, 2026). Active-component Sailors take two Physical Fitness Assessments a year, called Cycle-1 and Cycle-2; each is a body composition check plus the Physical Readiness Test (PRT):

  • push-ups and the forearm plank, with no alternates allowed;
  • cardio: the 1.5-mile run or walk, or, if the commanding officer authorizes it, a stationary bike, treadmill, rower, or 500-yard or 450-meter swim.

Guide-5A’s Table 4-1 (below 5,000 feet) and Table 4-2 (above 5,000 feet) give the raw score for each level by sex and age band (17–19 through 65+); the Navy PRT standards by age guide prints four of the levels for every band. Between two rows you earn the lower row. Selected rows for men 30–34 below 5,000 feet:

Good-Low60411:3613:45
Probationary45311:0714:30

Two satisfactory levels, Satisfactory-High (55) and Satisfactory-Medium (50), sit between Good-Low and Probationary. Above 5,000 feet the run times are slower: a 13:45 run that earns Good-Low (60) at sea level earns Good-Medium (65) on Table 4-2.

Bike and treadmill. The bike is scored only through the Navy’s PFA mobile app, from the bike model and calories burned; Guide-5A prints no bike table, so our calculator can’t score it. A Sailor with a body-composition waiver can’t choose the bike, because the score needs body weight. Guide-5A times the treadmill over 1.5 miles at a 1% incline but prints no treadmill column; our calculator doesn’t score it.

Passing. You pass the PRT with Probationary or better in all three events; failing any one event fails the whole test. Probationary is a pass with strings attached: Guide-1 enrolls you in the Fitness Enhancement Program until you score Good-Low or better in every event.

The overall score. Guide-5A defines it as a category-level performance corresponding to the average of the event points, and Guide-1 says evaluations and fitness reports show the Sailor’s overall PRT score. Neither guide says how to name the category when the average falls between two levels of different categories. We show the average to two decimals and, in those cases, both categories.

88.33 is above Excellent-High (85) and below Outstanding-Low (90).

The Navy’s overall PRT category comes from the average of the three event scores (men 32). Sailor A: 65 / 65 / 65 → 65.00; Sailor B: 85 / 70 / 70 → 75.00; Sailor C: 100 / 85 / 80 → 88.33.

PRT points, 45–100.

The third Sailor shows why this matters beyond pride. Guide-1’s high-performance exemption lets a Sailor over the body-fat limit still pass the PFA with an overall Outstanding-Low or higher and every event at Excellent-Medium (80) or higher. This Sailor meets the every-event part; whether 88.33 counts as Outstanding-Low isn’t written down anywhere we could find. Ask your command fitness leader how the Navy’s system records it.

Guide-5B (June 2026) names the Navy’s combat-arms communities: SEAL, Special Warfare Combat Crewman (SWCC), Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Fleet Diving. Active-component Sailors in them take the regular PFA in Cycle-1 and a Combat Fitness Assessment in Cycle-2. Its Combat Fitness Test is an 800-meter swim with fins, then push-ups for two minutes, pull-ups and a one-mile run, each of the last three with a 20-pound load. You must pass every event; Cycle-2, 2026 failures carry no administrative action, but they do require the combat-arms Fitness Enhancement Program.

For the regular PRT, the two guides disagree. Guide-1 says combat-arms Sailors pass with Good-High (70) or better on the male, age-normed standard in every event; Guide-5B says a minimum combined score of 70. We report both and don’t pick one; our calculator doesn’t score the combat-arms tests.

Marine Corps PFT and CFT

MCO 6100.13A sets two tests, each out of 300 points:

  • Physical Fitness Test (PFT) (January 1 to June 30): pull-ups or push-ups for two minutes — push-ups top out at 70 points, so 100 needs pull-ups — the plank (3:45 earns 100, 1:10 is the 40-point minimum) and a 3-mile run. Marines 46 and older may row 5,000 meters instead of running; younger Marines only when a health care provider recommends it for a medical condition, or after childbirth with the commander’s approval.
  • Combat Fitness Test (CFT) (July 1 to December 31): Movement to Contact (880 yards), Ammo Lift (a 30-pound can, two minutes) and Maneuver Under Fire.

Passing: at least 150 points and every event at or above its own table minimum. The order is blunt: missing the minimum in any one event fails the test, whatever the total. Classes: 1st 235–300, 2nd 200–234, 3rd 150–199. Recruits are scored on the 17–20 table whatever their age. The minimum and 100-point value of every event by age band and sex are in the Marine Corps PFT and CFT score chart.

Marine Corps combat arms: 210 on the male tables

MARADMIN 613/25 took effect January 1, 2026. Marines whose primary military occupational specialty (PMOS) is on its list of 32 combat-arms specialties (0302, 0306, 0311, 0313, 0321, 0331, 0341, 0352, 0363, 0369, 0370, 0372, 0393, 0399, 0802, 0803, 0811, 0842, 0844, 0847, 0848, 0861, 0869, 0871, 1302, 1371, 1803, 1833, 1834, 2305, 2336, 2339) are scored on the male, age-normed PFT tables and need 210 points, 70% of the maximum. Those who pass but fall short of 210 by the end of the period go to remedial training and may face reclassification or promotion limits. The message also says that, until further guidance, no adverse or punitive action will be taken. The Marine Corps release adds that personnel-system updates were expected to take six to eight months.

Non-combat-arms Marines keep the sex- and age-normed tables.
