Military retired pay in Wyoming
No income taxSources 1, 2, 3, 4
Wyoming has no personal income tax, so military retired pay is not taxed by the state. The Legislative Service Office lists the individual income tax rate as 0% with $0 collected, and the income tax chapter of the Wyoming statutes (W.S. 39-12-101) only reserves the field to the state and bars local income taxes.
Survivor Benefit Plan annuities
No income taxSources 1, 2
With no personal income tax, Wyoming does not tax Survivor Benefit Plan annuities.
Property tax relief for disabled veterans
Exemption or creditSources 5, 6
Wyoming’s veterans’ exemption (W.S. 39-13-105 and 39-11-105(a)(xxiv)) removes up to $6,000 of assessed value a year from property tax on the principal residence of a disabled veteran with a compensable service-connected disability with certification from the VA or a branch of the armed forces, who has been a Wyoming resident for at least three years. The same exemption is open to honorably discharged veterans of listed wartime periods (including World War II, Korea and Vietnam) and recipients of an expeditionary or campaign medal for armed conflict abroad.
- The veteran files a sworn claim with the county assessor on or before the fourth Monday in May; in later years the claimant stays qualified by contacting the assessor by that date to confirm eligibility.
- An exemption not used on property may be claimed against vehicle registration fees (W.S. 31-3-101(b)(iii)).
- The exemption is claimed in not more than one county.
Surviving spouse
A surviving spouse during widowhood or widowerhood (or the surviving parents if there is no surviving spouse) qualifies if the veteran and spouse were Wyoming residents at the veteran’s death, the spouse has lived in Wyoming at least three years, and the veteran would have qualified (W.S. 39-13-105(a)(v), (h)).
Vehicle registration for disabled veterans
Fee waiver or discountSources 7, 8, 6
A Wyoming resident disabled veteran who receives 50 percent or more service-connected disability compensation from the VA is exempt from registration fees for one vehicle that qualifies for Disabled Veteran license plates, a passenger car, pickup truck, motorcycle or multipurpose vehicle (W.S. 31-3-101(b)(xv), 31-2-215). The county treasurer issues one fee-exempt pair of plates a year to each applicant.
- One additional pair of Disabled Veteran plates for a motorcycle or multipurpose vehicle may be bought at regular fees. Applications and renewals are made each year at the county treasurer’s office, at least 30 days before the registration month ends.
- Veterans with an unused veterans’ property tax exemption may apply it against vehicle registration fees (W.S. 31-3-101(b)(iii)).
- The Disabled Veteran plate does not give disabled parking privileges. The sources read do not provide the plate exemption for a surviving spouse.
